Everybody says they hate cliches in love stories, and it’s true we hate cliches. But secretly we also really love some of them. They’re reassuring and comforting. Yes a book that surprises you and catches you off guard is amazing and we should praise the author, but sometimes it’s also nice to read books that you can see every ‘plot twist’ coming. Some cliches are better than others, we’re not talking about those cliches where the guy is an asshole and the girl is absolutely useless (*cough* Twilight). We’re talking about the good cliches that we secretly wish happened to us. So here you go, a list of 6 romantic cliches we say we hate, but secretly we don’t.
1. That cheesy meet queues
The thing with romantic books is that you know the plot only really starts when the characters meet, everything before that is just filler information for context. So when they finally meet you sigh in relief, you don’t even care that they met in the cheesiest of ways. Bumped into each other and she drops all of her stuff only to have him pick it up and establish eye contact? Love it! No matter how cheesy the meet queue is, we love it because now their love story can begin! And we also secretly find it cute.
2. The enemies that realize they’ve always secretly loved each other
Who doesn’t love following a story where you can see all that tension there is between them but you (the reader) seem to be the only one who knows they’re actually in love. We are all secretly addicted to seeing them slowly realize they actually like and appreciate small details about each other. Soon they go from throwing stuff at each other to literally throwing themselves at each other. We all prefer the latter.
3. The love triangle
This is a guilty pleasure cliche because it’s like you get two romance stories in one. The inevitable love triangle with all of its drama, complications, and tension makes any love story a page-turner. You spend half of the book picking who the best choice is and feel torn because you know it’s inevitable for someone to have their heart broken.
4.Scenes orchestrated so that the protagonists will FINALLY realize they like each other and do something about it.
You definitely know what scenes and scenarios we’re referring to getting stuck in an elevator during a blackout that forces them to talk and realize they’re super attracted to each other. Perhaps it’s that scene where everyone is bashing one of the characters and the other jumps in to point out how incredible they actually are, making them both come to terms with the fact they really want to be together. We can see these situations coming a mile away, but we love them because it means they’re finally going to stop denying their attraction and get together.
5.‘Let’s pretend to date’....but end up actually dating
This one doesn’t need much explanation. We really just love how the characters are pretending to like each other, then start liking each other without realizing it and then suddenly they’re riding into the sunset. Bonus points if everyone around them notices they have true love before they stop pretending to date. I think everyone at some point has wished to be in this situation.
6.That silly gesture that’s actually a pretty big gesture
True love is not just shown by the big traditional gestures, but by those silly quirky ones that you know are more meaningful. You know what we’re talking about. The guy buys that one book the girl has been talking about for ages, and reads it because she means a lot to him. Gestures that show the reader that their love is true and pure.
Like we said at the beginning, these are cliches everyone says they hate but smile in secret when they read about them. They just make love seem so much simpler than it is.
