Putting a ring on it: Is Christmas the right time?

It appears that Christmas very much is the season for sparkle – the sparkle of an engagement ring that is. There is something about the festive season which brings out the romance in people, or smitten men to be more accurate (sorry sisters, that appears that proposing is still mainly done by men despite these enlightened times we live it).

We probably all know someone who has ‘put a ring on it’ come Christmas time or sometime around the holiday period and depending on how you feel about this custom, you either rolled your eyes or they lit up with joy (especially if you were the one on the receiving end of the sparkler).

According to unscientific research – we're talking Facebook here people – the festive season is still among the most popular times of the year to pop the question. How does the social media behemoth know this? Well, Facebook report that that the most common time of the year for users to change their relationship status from ‘in a relationship’ to ‘engaged’ is either Christmas, New Year’s Day or Valentine’s Day.

It’s obviously still a prime time of the year to get down on one knee, but is it the right time? There are arguments for and against. Those who are against it feel that popping the question in front of your or their family at a time when they have no immediate escape route is forcing them into a corner.

However, for the old romantics out there, there can be no better time to tell the one you love that you want to spend the rest of your life with them.
