Most people don’t expect more than a card, some flowers and maybe some chocolates on Valentine’s Day, but for others it represents to the opportunity to either pop to question, or answer it.
Unsurprisingly, Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular days of the year for proposals, right up there with Christmas – must be all the mistletoe - and New Year’s Eve (yep, many a knee drops when the ball drops).
However, it’s hard to get cold hard facts on how many people ‘put a ring on it’ on February 14. Researchers have usually relied on a combination of updated statuses on social media and a spike in jewelry sales around this time of year to come to the conclusion that Valentine’s Day sparks a spike in proposals. That and all the romantic feelings that are knocking about too.
According to findings by one jewelry company, around six million Americans either plan or expect a Valentine’s Day proposal. Given that there are estimated to be 14 million marriage proposals in the US each year, this is a strong indicator that February is a big time to pop the question.
The lead up to Valentine’s Day also sees a noticeable rise in the purchase of jewelry. Ok, so not every piece of jewelry bought is going to be an engagement ring, but in February 2016, around $4.5 billion was spent on jewelry for Valentine’s Day. You know that there had to be a rock or two in there somewhere, right.
So it seems that the trend of proposing on Valentine’s Day isn’t set to wane any time soon.
